Art Catalogs & Design Books

“Books are the best medium for the artists of our times,” says Sol LeWitt, a US-American minimalist artist. Actually, a well-made art or picture book is like a gallery in an easy-to-handle book format. From this perspective, it also has to fulfil the same quality demands as a museum or a gallery. Concept, design and selection of materials are important.

The Future of the Book is blue

Brochure made of royal blue Colorplan 270 g/m² paper, book block consisting of 256 1/1 coloured inside pages made of Munken Print White, exactly matching coloured edges, special paper size, manually wrapped in a 2-coloured packing paper, glued with a sticker

In defiance of the digital revolution: In Frankfurt there are still passionate book lovers, bookster-frankfurt.de introduces at least two a month. We haven’t only been introduced ourselves as an integral part of the local book scene, we have also produced a very special edition for the online magazine. Books & Bookster consists of twelve conversations with Frankfurt experts. And as a book about the future of books should be, the outer design from Sandra Doeller is super innovative. The binding and colour edges are blue-in-blue, book cover and book block perfectly flush. In contrast to the virtual world the analogue medium is evenly stressed in its haptic materiality and objectivity. A further trick: The essential info is not on the cover but rather printed on white wrapping paper so that the publication strikes one as a gift. And the crowning conclusion: The Stiftung Buchkunst Prize.

Art Calendar with project presentations

Flexcover made of Smooth Bonded Leather individually printed in a spot colour, book block made of 192 inside pages made of 120 g/m² cream premium paper Munken Pure with an individual dot grid, 74 image pages 4/4 coloured displayed in the book block, nuuna Graphic L paper size

The broken white surface of these matte, calendar bound books with smooth bonded leather is a bit reminiscent of natural ceramic. This is not a coincidence, as we produced the art calendar for Rosenthal, the world-famous manufacturer of high-quality porcelain. “Long tradition, young creation” –  the traditional company promotes young designers and artists. A project in cooperation with the students of the technical college in Bielefeld is presented in the inside of the book. Tradition and innovation do not necessarily cancel each other out.

The Rosenthal Gropius Notebook

Flexcover made of bronze metallic material, white silkscreen printed, front- and end leaves printed in neon green, book block consisting of 240 pages 120 g/m² Munken Pure premium paper with individual dot grid, 8 image pages, 2/2 black and bronze coloured, printed and bound before the book block, nuuna Graphic L paper size

Can you imagine that the legendary architect and founder of the Bauhaus once designed a pigsty? The explanation is a lost bet with Philip Rosenthal. On the 100th birthday of the company director, the forgotten draft was realised after nearly forty years. This notebook is dedicated to this extraordinary project. A small pig on the cover – a Gropius drawing– architecture drafts on a grass green front- and end leave, as well as explanatory image pages at the beginning of the book block refer to this special anecdote.
